Ferns, salamanders, vultures, and more: Free outdoor programs in the Greenbrier Valley this fall

Appalachian Headwaters invites you to get outdoors this fall and learn cool stuff about our Wild and Wonderful – with the Greenbrier Chapter of the WV Master Naturalist Program! 

The Master Naturalist program offers fun, interactive classes that develop knowledge, practical skills and your own curiosity on a variety of topics. All individual programs are free and open to the general public. No experience necessary!

Interested folks can become a member of the WV DNR-sponsored Master Naturalist Program and work towards certification. Appalachian Headwaters is the chapter sponsor of the Greenbrier River chapter.

Greenbrier Chapter Fall Classes – all FREE and open to the general public

Fern ID and Fall Fruits Walk – Sunday, Sept 13 from 2 – 4:30 PM, Greenbrier River Trail

Get to know your local ferns, fall wildflowers and fruiting plants on a guided walk with botanist Mel Waggy and Appalachian Headwaters.

Caterpillars Count! And Finding Rare Bees – Sunday, Sept 20 from 2 – 4:30 PMat Wood Thrush Park (334 Richland Ln, Lewisburg) 

Fall is caterpillar time! Learn how to monitor for fall caterpillars and discover rare bees on a new trail – while contributing to science – with Kevin Johnson. 

White Sulphur Springs National Fish Hatchery: Story of Recreation and Recovery – Thursday, Sept 24 from 6 – 7 PM at Ascend Lewisburg

Learn all about the past, present, and future work of the WSS Fish Hatchery and how you can get involved with USFWS Fish Biologist, Andrew Phipps. Part of the Lewisburg Green Drinks monthly series.

Salamander Talk and Guided Hike – Saturday, Sept 26 from 10 – 11:30 AM at Wood Thrush Park

Get familiar with our native salamanders and where to find them in this program lead by Ohio University PhD candidate Libby Kramer.

Native Seed Workshop: Collecting, Processing and Saving – Saturday, Oct 3 from 10 AM to noon at Wood Thrush Park

Learn how to collect, process and save native plant seeds in this workshop lead by Headwaters Native Plants.

Landowner Workshop: Deer Ecology, Problems and Solutions – Sunday, Oct 18 from 10 AM to noon at Wood Thrush Park

Join Dr. Tom Saladyga and Dr. Merri Collins for this workshop focused on deer ecology, their impacts and discussing possible solutions. Participants will visit a newly installed deer exclosure.

Vulture Culture: Ecology of a Dead Body Snatcher – Thursday, Oct 29 from 6 – 8 PM at Greenbrier Valley Brewing Company
