Bluefield State battles on the road at Virginia Union
Richmond, VA — Bluefield State University football lost 42-0 to Virginia Union University Saturday evening at Hovey Field.
The Big Blue came out looking to establish its presence early. Bluefield State’s defense finished the night with seven tackles for loss and recorded two takeaways.
Bluefield State also showed consistency in the kicking game, recording nine punts for 378 yards and averaging 42.0 yards per punt. Three of those punts traveled 50 yards or more, helping the Big Blue create difficult field position for the Panthers.
Offensively the Big Blue finished with 106 total yards, including 85 passing yards and 21 rushing yards. The offense also converted nine first downs during the contest.
Bluefield State created one of its best opportunities late in the second quarter after recovering a Virginia Union fumble at the Panthers’ 18-yard line. The Big Blue moved into scoring range, but a field-goal attempt was blocked with eight seconds remaining before halftime.
The Big Blue defense opened the second half with another momentum play, recovering a Virginia Union fumble after a sack to give the offense possession at its own 36-yard line.
Bluefield State continued to compete on both sides of the ball, including a 46-yard scoring opportunity drive in the third quarter that lasted more than five minutes and featured a 32-yard completion to move the Big Blue deep into Virginia Union territory.
Despite the final score, Bluefield State continued to battle throughout the game and will look to use the experience as it moves forward in conference play.
