University of Charleston gets a strong win over WVSU

Institute, W.Va. –The University of Charleston took down rival West Virginia State University in an electric road win on Tuesday night. 

The Basics:
Location: Walker Convocation Center
Score: Charleston 3, West Virginia State 1
Records: UC (10-9, 3-3 MEC), WVSU (7-9, 3-3 MEC)

How It Happened:
In this rival showdown, the Golden Eagles came out swinging in set one with a .412 hitting percentage. After the first point went to the Yellow Jackets, UC reclaimed the lead and didn’t look back. Charleston went on a 7-0 run to bring the score to 18-6. After a pair of service aces from Erin Lowe, UC would take set one 25-15. WVSU responded quickly in set two behind the support of their home fans. After pulling ahead early, State would take the second set by a score of 25-17. But in set three, Charleston was once again on the attack, taking an early 10-4 lead. The Yellow Jackets had a strong counter, bringing the score even at 20-20. UC would close out the third set with back-to-back kills from Kate Strong to take it 25-22. The fourth set featured nine tied scores and three lead changes. Charleston would carry their momentum into set four, with an early 10-4 lead once again. State began to battle back, keeping the match close, with crowd noise increasing after every point won. And, after a couple of runs, the Yellow Jackets would find themselves at set point up 24-23. The two sides traded points at a time, with State having UC on the ropes and the Golden Eagles countering to make it even. Trailing 28-27, Charleston strung together a kill from Jasmine Broberg, a service ace from Madison Easton, and a kill from Kate Strong to silence the WVSU crowd and take the set 30-28. 

Patrycja Majos led the Golden Eagles with 13 kills, with Jasmine Broberg adding 12. Kate Strong provided a solid defensive effort behind 9 blocks and contributed 9 kills of her own. Sahana Rajesh led the match with 20 digs and Erin Lowe had 19 assists.

The Golden Eagles will return home to take on the Bobcats of Frostburg State University on Friday, October 9th at 7:00 pm.
