CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Former West Virginia State Senator Richard Ojeda is going to Congress.
The Logan County, WV, native moved to central North Carolina several years ago along with his family. He ran for Congress this year against incumbent Congressman Richard Hudson, Chairman of the Republican National Congressional Committee, and scored an upset victory.
“I spent 24 years in the Army, and I’ve been in some hard fights. This is the one I’ll remember for the rest of my life,” Ojeda said on Tuesday night. “The people of NC-09 looked at the guy running the entire Republican money machine, and they fired him. This win belongs to every teacher, every nurse, every veteran, every family at Fort Bragg and every working person who’s sick and tired of watching the billionaire class take everything. They deserve better. Starting in January, they’re going to get it.”
The 9th District in NC includes Fort Bragg, parts of Greensboro, and the Pinehurst area. The district had been held by a Republican since 1963. In the 2024 election, Hudson won by a margin of 56%-37%.
“I lost a lot of friends in a war sold on a lie, and I’m going to Congress to make sure nobody’s kid gets sent to another one,” Ojeda said in a statement after his race was called, discussing his plans for the office. “I’m going to fight to lower drug prices, protect Social Security and the VA, and get corporate money out of our politics. This district gave a kid from the West Virginia coalfields a chance, and I will never forget it.”
