Golden Bears shut out Campbellsville, 3-0
CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Three Golden Bears found the back of the net Wednesday afternoon as WVU Tech men’s soccer earned a 3-0 road victory over Campbellsville University at Finley Stadium.
WVU Tech improved to 2-1-3 on the season and recorded its second shutout through six matches.
The Golden Bears controlled much of the opening half, generating 13 shots and five corner kicks while limiting Campbellsville to four attempts. Junior Joost Hermeling was particularly active early, putting four shots on target in the opening 20 minutes. Three were stopped by goalkeeper Malthe Schou, while Campbellsville’s Ollie Jagroop made a defensive save on another.
Gonzalo Sabeh broke through for Tech in the 35th minute. The sophomore scored at 34:05 to give the Golden Bears a 1-0 advantage with his second goal of the season.
Campbellsville generated a pair of late chances before the break, but Ramon Ferrari stopped shots from Mihlali Blesi and Inaki Perez to send Tech into halftime with the one-goal lead.
The Golden Bears quickly created separation in the second half.
Freshman Danilo Jokovic converted a penalty kick at 54:28 to double the advantage. The goal was Jokovic’s first collegiate goal.
Just 74 seconds later, Francisco Mustra set up Wilfredo Briceño for Tech’s third goal. Briceño finished at 55:42 for his third goal of the season, while Mustra picked up his first assist.
The Golden Bears continued to apply pressure after building the three-goal lead. Gonzalo Colman finished with a team-high five shots, while Mustra and Sabeh recorded four apiece. Hermeling also had four attempts, putting all four on goal.
Ferrari and the Tech defense kept Campbellsville off the board the rest of the way. Ferrari made two more saves in the second half to finish with four for the match while playing all 90 minutes in goal.
WVU Tech finished with a 23-8 advantage in shots, including an 11-4 edge in shots on goal. The Golden Bears also held a 9-6 advantage in corner kicks.
Sabeh, Jokovic and Briceño accounted for Tech’s three goals, while Mustra recorded the lone assist. The victory marked the Golden Bears’ second win of the season and their first on the road.
Through six matches, WVU Tech has scored 12 goals, averaging two per game.
What’s next
WVU Tech has a break before returning to action Saturday, Sept. 26, when the Golden Bears travel to Winston-Salem, North Carolina, to face Carolina University. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
