Hinton Area Foundation offers tax credits for gifts that support Summers County
PRESS RELEASE
Limited NIP credits remain available for qualifying donations of $500 or more
HINTON, WV — The Hinton Area Foundation is inviting donors to support causes they care about while receiving a West Virginia state tax credit through the Neighborhood Investment Program (NIP).
The Foundation has limited tax credits remaining from its $33,400 allocation for fiscal year 2027. Eligible donors can receive a state tax credit equal to 50% of their qualifying contribution of $500 or more. Credits are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
“Every donor has something that matters deeply to them—helping students pursue an education, supporting a local organization, or strengthening the community for future generations,” said Sheila Pillath, Executive Director of the Hinton Area Foundation. “NIP gives donors an opportunity to put more of their dollars toward those causes while reducing their West Virginia taxes.”
For example, a qualifying $1,000 donation earns $500 in West Virginia tax credits. A separate 3% processing fee is required in addition to the gift. A $500 donation plus the $15 fee totals $515; the fee does not earn tax credits.
“Summers County is important to me, and giving through the Foundation is one way I can help care for its future,” said David Ziegler, Hinton Area Foundation founder and donor. “With NIP, I can support a cause I care about and receive a tax credit in return. It’s a smart way to give.”
Donors may contribute to an existing qualifying fund or explore establishing a new fund. Contributions are welcome to funds named for other individuals or families; donors do not need to have a fund of their own to participate.
Donors should contact the Foundation before making a contribution to confirm fund eligibility and reserve available credits. Gifts intended for the 2026 tax year must be completed by December 31, 2026. Gifts completed January 1–June 30, 2027, may qualify for the 2027 tax year, subject to credit availability.

Tax credits are subject to program requirements and individual tax limitations. Donors should consult their tax advisors regarding their circumstances.
