New scholarship honors Jenny Woodrum’s legacy and supports Summers County students
PRESS RELEASE
HINTON, WV — Hinton Area Foundation announces the establishment of the Jenny Woodrum Memorial STEM Scholarship fund, created by Jenny’s sister and parents to honor her memory and help Summers County students pursue higher education.
The scholarship celebrates Jenny’s academic achievements, career and connection to her hometown, with priority given to female students pursuing science, technology, engineering or mathematics.
Jenny graduated with honors from Summers County High School and West Virginia Wesleyan College, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and religion. She later earned a master’s degree in acquisitions from Central Michigan University. Her career as a civilian employee at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base culminated in her retirement as an Operations Research Analyst in 2025.
Having received scholarships herself, Jenny understood the difference educational support could make. Her sister established this fund in her memory to extend that opportunity to future generations.
“Jenny knew firsthand what it meant to receive a scholarship and have someone believe in her future,” said Lesley Sears, Jenny’s sister. “Our hope is that this scholarship will give other Summers County students that same encouragement, especially young women pursuing a path in STEM. It’s a way to honor Jenny’s memory while helping someone else take the next step toward their dreams.”
“This scholarship connects Jenny’s love of learning and her accomplishments with opportunities for students here at home,” said Sheila Pillath, Executive Director of Hinton Area Foundation. “Her family’s gift creates a lasting way to remember Jenny while helping students build futures of their own.”
The fund provides an annual scholarship of $1,000 to one eligible applicant, subject to available funds. Applicants must be Summers County residents and graduates of Summers County Comprehensive High School. Summers County students already attending college are also eligible.
Priority will be given to female applicants pursuing STEM fields. If no applicant meets that preference, the scholarship may be awarded to the next best eligible candidate. The scholarship is renewable for up to four years, provided the recipient continues to meet eligibility requirements and remains in good standing. As the fund grows, award amounts or the number of scholarships may increase.
Community members, friends and family are invited to contribute to the Jenny Woodrum Memorial STEM Scholarship Fund. Gifts of any size will help carry Jenny’s legacy forward and support educational opportunities for Summers County students.
