Teresa Fowler & Dana Perry

With a combined 64 years of experience as lifeguards and water safety instructors, chances are Dana Perry and Teresa Fowler had a hand in keeping you and your kids safe at a pool across southern West Virginia over the last few decades. They have trained many lifeguards over the years, and they have no plans to stop anytime soon.

Recently, they began teaching a new program at the Greenbrier Valley Aquatic Center for sixth grade students from Eastern and Western Greenbrier Middle Schools. More than 140 students have learned how to swim for the first time or have learned to be safer in the water thanks to their educational efforts.

What drives them to do what they do? “It’s so fulfilling to know you’re teaching somebody how to save their life,” Dana says. “It’s a calling.”

“If it wasn’t a gift, I wouldn’t have been teaching this long,” Teresa adds. “You can almost see the light bulb going off when the students get it. I love seeing that.”

For their commitment to water safety, training future lifeguards, and offering community recreation classes, we are proud to name Dana Perry and Teresa Fowler as the certified Real West Virginians of the Week!

If you would like to nominate someone for a future week, please contact us at news@therealwv.com.
