If it’s creepy and it’s crawly, or spooky – maybe a little scary, controversial, entertaining, or just flat out interesting – you’ve probably heard about it on JD Belcher’s “Creepalachia” podcast. With nearly 5,000 subscribers on YouTube, and close to 70,000 followers on Facebook, Creepalachia has become one of the fastest-growing programs in the State of West Virginia. And with Belcher’s easy-going demeanor and “old friend” conversational style, it’s easy to understand why.
A former coal miner and video production guy, Belcher meets the rich folklore of the Mountain State head on, and shines a non-judgemental light on the darkest corners of our state’s history. He gives victims a platform, lends a voice to those who can no longer speak for themselves, and tells the stories that make West Virginia wild and wonderful.
For finding and telling West Virginia’s stories in such an unflinching way, and highlighting the people who so often go unrecognized, we are thrilled to name JD Belcher as the certified Real West Virginian of the Week.
