A brief history of the Craik-Patton House
Built in 1834 by James Craik and his wife, Juliet Shrewsbury, and originally named “Elm Grove,” the Craik Patton House stands as one of Charleston’s finest examples of Greek Revival architecture. James Craik was the grandson of Dr. James Craik, personal physician and close friend to President George Washington. Later, the home was purchased by Confederate Colonel George S. Patton I, grandfather of the legendary World War II General George S. Patton. The house played a role in the Civil War era and has been lovingly preserved and maintained by the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in West Virginia. Moved to its current scenic location overlooking the Kanawha River in 1973, it now serves as a public museum and educational resource dedicated to preserving the history of the Kanawha Valley, West Virginia, and the United States.
As a nonprofit organization, the Craik-Patton House continues its mission to inspire education and engagement by preserving and promoting the historical and cultural legacies that have shaped our region for over two centuries. “We are thrilled to host this America 250 event,” said Pat Moyers, Chair of the Board at the Craik-Patton House. “This celebration allows us to honor our nation’s founding ideals while connecting them to the vibrant history right here in the Kanawha Valley.”
