ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University football team racked up more than 430 yards of offense and forced four turnovers in a 41-31 win over Frostburg State Saturday afternoon in Mountain East Conference action at Callaghan Stadium.

The Mountain Lions (3-2, 1-2 MEC) shot out to a 14-6 lead as they scored on their first two drives. Sophomore wide receiver Ethan Jackson reeled in his first career touchdown to cap a six-play, 62-yard drive to open the game. After Frostburg State (2-3, 1-2 MEC) scored on its first drive, CU went right down the field in seven plays as sophomore wide receiver Dom Collins grabbed a slant over the middle, and raced 40 yards for his first score of the day.

Frostburg State answered with a safety and a field goal on the ensuing possession to draw within 14-11, but again Collins and the offense needed just four plays to stretch the lead out to 10 points, 21-11, with 6:42 left in the second quarter. Collins’ second touchdown was a fade to the back right pylon as he was interfered with, juggled the ball, and still hauled in a 23-yard score from graduate quarterback Devin Kargman.

Concord went into halftime up 24-18 as FSU made it a three-point game, but the Mountain Lions covered 71 yards in just 55 seconds—giving freshman kicker Christian Torres time to send a 22-yard field goal through the uprights as the halftime buzzer sounded.

The first of three second half takeaways came on FSU’s first drive of the third quarter when redshirt freshman defensive Elijah Owens picked off a pass. CU paid off the turnover as Torres connected on a 25-yard field goal.

However, Frostburg State took its first lead of the day with 13 straight points, going up 31-27 in the first 40 seconds of the fourth.

Down four points, the Mountain Lions put together back-to-back impressive drives to regain a 41-31 advantage. Junior running back Greg Burrell capped a nine-play, 75-yard drive with a five-yard touchdown to give Concord a 34-31 edge at the 10:22 mark.

CU’s defense forced a three-and-out, and the offense followed with an 11-play, 63-yard touchdown drive that drained nearly five minutes of the clock. The scoring play was a 4th-and-1 toss by Kargman to Jackson from 12 yards out.

Still with work to do, the Concord defense produced turnovers on consecutive FSU drives to seal the win. Junior defensive back Bradly Harris stepped in front of a pass at the 26-yard line, and on the following possession, redshirt freshman defensive end Quay McCauley came up with a strip sack that was recovered by sophomore defensive back Marley Ashley at the Concord 20-yard line.

Kargman had his second straight 300-yard passing day with 310 yards and a career-best four touchdowns. Collins had a career-best nine receptions for 152 yards and two touchdowns. Jackson had his first two touchdown catches to go with 51 yards on four receptions.

Senior running back Maurice Jones finished one yard shy of 100 yards on the ground. He recorded a career-high 24 carries.

Junior defensive back Ar’Terrian Godfrey led the CU defense with eight tackles. Owens only had two tackles, both sacks, to go with an interception and a forced fumble. Junior linebacker Jonathan Williams had a first-half red zone interception to stall a Frostburg State scoring chance.

Frostburg State finished the game with 219 penalty yards on 18 accepted infractions.

Concord travels to West Virginia State Saturday, October 10.
