Volleyball captures first MEC win of 2026 versus Shawnee State
GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Glenville State Volleyball team earned its first Mountain East Conference victory of the season Tuesday (Sept. 22) night, sweeping Shawnee State, 3-0, inside the Waco Center. GSU moves to (7-6, 1-1 MEC) on the year.
Shawnee State opened the match with an early advantage as Glenville State worked to settle into the opening frame. The Bears built an 8-4 lead before the Pioneers began to cut the deficit. GSU evened the set at 9-9 and continued to build momentum from there. The blue and white created separation through the middle portion of the frame and maintained control down the stretch. Glenville State closed out the opening set with a 25-16 victory to take a 1-0 advantage in the match. The second set featured another competitive start between the two sides. Shawnee State held a 9-6 advantage early before Glenville State began to find its rhythm. The Pioneers remained within striking distance and, after trailing 13-11, put together a six-point run to move ahead 17-13. Shawnee State attempted ot cut into the advantage late, but GSU remained in control through the closing points. Glenville State secured the second set, 25-20, moving within one set of the sweep.
Shawnee State responded with a strong start in the third, jumping out to a 6-1 advantage. The Bears maintained their lead through much of the frame and held a 20-16 edge late in the set. Glenville State continued to battle and erased the deficit, evening the score at 20-20. The two sides traded points from there as neither team was able to create separation. Shawnee State moved ahead 23-21, but the Pioneers responded once again to tie the frame at 23-23. The back-and-forth battle continued into extra points before Glenville State secured the final two points of the night, taking the third set 28-26 and completing the 3-0 sweep.

Brianne Hicks led Shawnee State’s offense with nine kills, while Kaylee McInnis followed with eight. Jalynn West directed the Bears’ attack with 25 assists. Graciana Claxon paced the defensive effort with 13 digs and West added nine. McInnis led Shawnee State at the net with five blocks.
Glenville State
Juliana Nunez led Glenville State’s offense with a match-high 13 kills, while Veronic Snyder-Cotton followed with 10 and Mylani Jackson added eight. Irmak Bezek directed the Pioneers’ attack with 27 assists and Elitsa Peneva added 15. Bezek led GSU from the service line with four aces, while Gracie Brown added two. Kassie Swink paced the defensive effort with a match-high 17 digs, followed by Brown with 14. Deniz Selen Yazar added five kills and two blocks for the Pioneers.

The Pioneers return to action Friday (Sept. 25), welcoming West Virginia State to the Waco Center. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m.
