Traffic info for Fayette County as Scout Jamboree opens

PRESS RELEASE

LOCAL TRAFFIC ALERT:  More than 15,000 Scout and Scouting Volunteers Set to Arrive at the 2026 National Jamboree at The Summit Bechtel Reserve in the New River Gorge area of Glen Jean, WV, in Fayette County, on July 21, 2026, and departing July 31, 2026, impacting regional and local traffic patterns with possibly congestion.

WHO:  Approximately 15,000 Scouts and Scouting Volunteers from across the United States to arrive for the 2026 National Jamboree in Glen Jean, WV.

WHAT:  The 2026 National Jamboree is scheduled for July 22 – 31, 2026, at Scouting’s 14,000-acre Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia. The 2026 National Jamboree features a program of educational and training events; high adventure activities; tests of strength and endurance; entertainment, and camaraderie with fellow Scouts from around the nation.

WHEN:
Wednesday, July 22 (Arrival Day)
Thursday, July 23 – 30 (Jamboree Daily Activities)
Friday, July 31 (Departure Day)
 
WHERE:  Around the Summit Bechtel Reserve, near the New River Gorge National Park & Preserve area of Glen Jean, WV

WHY:  To inform travelers through the area thatScouts and Scouting Volunteers taking part in the 2026 Jamboree will be commuting via buses and personal vehicles to the Summit Bechtel Reserve in Glen Jean, WV.

HOW:  Increased traffic and congestion should be expected in the area over the next 10 days.  Heavier traffic will be realized on Wednesday, July 22 and Friday, July, July 31.  Beckley, Mount Hope, Pea Ridge, and the New River Gorge National Park & Preserve in Fayette and Raleigh Counties are among the towns that will see increased traffic as the buses start to arrive on Wednesday, July 22.

Impacted Roadways Include:

  • U.S. Route 19 (US 19) between Beckley, WV and Fayetteville, WV
  • WV Route 16 (WV 16) between Beckley, WV and Fayetteville, WV
  • Interstate 77 (I 77) from Charlotte, NC to Glen Jean, WV
