Golden Bears strike late for 2-1 win over MVNU
BECKLEY, W.Va. — Julia Silva scored with 20 seconds remaining Saturday afternoon to lift WVU Tech women’s soccer to a 2-1 victory over Mount Vernon Nazarene University at the YMCA Paul Cline Memorial Sports Complex. The Golden Bears answered an 85th-minute equalizer with Silva’s late winner to improve to 4-3 overall and earn their second straight victory.
WVU Tech created chances from the opening minutes, forcing Mount Vernon Nazarene goalkeeper Hailey Burger into saves on attempts from Rocío Gutiérrez, Sigurros Hauksdottir and Silva during the first 14 minutes. Oda Aksnes added another shot on goal in the 21st minute as the Golden Bears continued to apply pressure.
That pressure paid off at 25:05. Freshman Shiloh Goodwin put Tech in front with her third goal of the season, finishing off an assist from senior Sofia Filgueira for a 1-0 advantage. The Golden Bears kept creating opportunities through the remainder of the half and went into the break after producing 14 shots, nine of them on goal.
Tech continued to create chances after halftime. Gutiérrez forced another save in the 55th minute and later put another attempt on goal in the 80th. The Golden Bears also generated all four of their corner kicks after the break while limiting Mount Vernon Nazarene to just two second-half shots.
Mount Vernon Nazarene found the equalizer at 84:18 when Alex Erslan scored to make it 1-1. WVU Tech responded by earning a corner 30 seconds later and continued to press forward.
With the match nearly over, Silva delivered. The junior found the back of the net at 89:40, putting the Golden Bears ahead 2-1 with 20 seconds remaining. Tech saw out the final moments to secure its second consecutive home victory.
Gutiérrez led WVU Tech with six shots and put four on goal, while Silva finished with four shots, three on target and the game-winning goal. Goodwin scored on one of her two attempts, and Hauksdottir, Aksnes, Andrea Moreno and Addison Burt also put shots on frame. Filgueira recorded the assist on Goodwin’s opening goal.
The Golden Bears finished with a 22-5 advantage in total shots and a 12-3 edge in shots on goal. Irene Saldaña made two saves over 90 minutes, while Burger finished with 10 saves for Mount Vernon Nazarene.
Through seven matches, WVU Tech has scored 12 goals on 94 shots, putting 38 attempts on goal. The Golden Bears have also recorded 26 corner kicks and 25 saves.

WVU Tech remains at home Tuesday, Sept. 15, when the Golden Bears welcome Cumberland University to the YMCA Paul Cline Memorial Sports Complex. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
