Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration Committee to host community fish fry Sept. 19

LEWISBURG, W.Va — To help raise money for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration in Lewisburg this coming year, there will be a Community Fish Fry from noon to 3 PM on Saturday, September the 19th at Dorie Miller Park, 401 Feamster Road. The cost per meal of fish, side dishes, drinks, and dessert is to be $10. Containers will be available for carry out, but there will be no phone-in orders, and the limit is four plates per order.
It will be a good opportunity to be with other supporters of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration, and the weather will be pleasant compared to that of MLK Days in mid-January. Donations will be accepted.
One of the above photos shows the picnic shelter in the park where the Community Fish Fry will take place. The park was established in the early 1940s, and was named in honor of Doris “Dorie” Miller, an African American US Navy hero serving on the USS West Virginia during the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. The naming was made at the request of the principal of nearby Bolling School in 1945.
The other photo shows a 7-by-7-foot painting of Dr. King that will be displayed during the event on the wall of the picnic shelter as was the case for the Community Fish Fry in the summer of 2025. Several years ago, it was created in color on the stage of Carnegie Hall during a performance by ArTrageous, a troupe which combined, music, singing, dancing, and of course, the painting of large pictures.
