THE FRONT PORCH: The importance of slowing down
By Dakota Baker, RealWV
How long has it been since you actually slowed down for a moment instead of treating every day like a race to get through? Most of us wake up already thinking about all the things on our to-do list for the day. We rush through mornings, speed through work or school, and then doomscroll on our phones until we finally fall asleep. Somewhere along the way, life has started feeling less like living and more like trying to keep up.
This is what makes the concept of “slowing down” so important. Slowing down does not mean being lazy or unproductive. It just means giving yourself the time to actually experience life while you are living it. Some of the best moments happen when we stop rushing long enough to notice them, like sitting outside when the weather is nice, listening to music without multitasking, talking to someone without checking your phone, or even taking a quiet drive. All of these can make you feel more present and less overwhelmed.
A lot of people think being constantly busy equals success, but being exhausted all the time should not be normal. When we never slow down, the stress continues to build. Sometimes, it builds until we are on the verge of collapse, making it harder to focus, harder to enjoy things, and easier to feel burned out. Taking breaks and giving yourself space to breathe is much better for your mental health and overall quality of life than wearing yourself thin to cross that invisible finish line.
Life is already moving fast enough on its own. There is no reason to rush through every single moment. Slowing down allows you to appreciate where you are, the people around you, and even yourself. At the end of the day, nobody remembers how quickly they got through life. What matters is whether they actually took the time to live it. Truth be told, there is no finish line. Life is always going to throw new things your way, and you have your whole life ahead of you. Make sure you are enjoying it.
If I can offer you one piece of advice this Monday, remember that there is no award for never taking a break.
